The Bottled Imp – Episode 41
Let’s come out of the shadows and take a peek at ‘What We Do in the Shadows’. Written and directed by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement (of Flight of the Concords fame), released in 2014 and starring Taika Waititi, Jemaine Clement, Rhys Darby, Jonathan Brugh, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, and Stu Rutherford.
This horror comedy mockumentary follows the ups and downs of a group of vampires, from all different eras, who live together in contemporary Wellington, New Zealand. It documents their everyday living habits, their wishes, their thoughts of what it is to be a vampire and their somewhat strange, to human minds at least, views on how to behave in modern times.
I have my brother to thank for introducing me to this witty and clever film. As a huge fan of ‘The Flight of the Concords’ I’m always keen to see what co-creator Jemaine Clement has created. This is a genius concept with lots packed into its 85 minute running time. My first thought was ‘how can they sustain the viewer interest – what’s the plot?’ Well, in all true traditions of the mockumentary genre, the plot emerges from the characters and in this case the characters are vampires. So you can expect the unusual, the weird, and the gothic. But I wasn’t expecting to be emotionally moved! I was expecting to laugh, after all it’s a comedy but to have a few tears trickle out of my eye was a pleasant surprise. I wasn’t expecting to be sympathetic to vampires! But enough of this otherwise I’ll be getting into spoiler territory. And none of us what that…
So, settle back in a dark room and sink your teeth into The Bottled Imp review of ‘What We Do in the Shadows’. I dare you…
