Europa Report (2013) movie review science fiction thriller

My review for Europa Report. I have to give this movie credit. Science fiction films like this are not done enough by Hollywood.

They only had one radio. And it's systems were on the outside of the ship. In a fuse box. WOW! that was so realistic, it was scary. No one left on the command module in orbit? That right there is a huge FAIL! 30 dozen robots sent to the surface would have been a better idea, since the humans never planned to go outside the lander anyways. etc, etc, etc.
It was a nice movie, I liked it.
Now…. you know we must go back and nuke them from orbit. 😉

Maybe. Of the movies I like that have little to no character development (Only God Forgives, Valhalla Rising, Gravity, etc.) They all have tension and drama that I think really help pull me in. This movie had drama though but I just didn't feel it. Maybe it was because it was a found-footage.

z ahio says:

Maybe you just need more drama than me. In my opinion almost every movie gets so emotional that it makes me sick. There's no such drama in real world and no reason to exaggerate.

bman2095 says:

Yes but this movie also gave us no characters to root for. I obviously don't want to see them die, but I'm unaffected when they do if they have no likable character. Take for example when Copley's character died. It was supposed to be sad (shown by the music, the way the others acted, etc.) but I felt nothing for him because I had only known him for about twenty minutes with no development, and no reason TO feel sad.

z ahio says:

I think it was unnecessary, that alien was in that ship she used to escape. Aliens is a great movie too, but its ending with robot fight was so bad.

In reality you don't have deep feelings for most of the people, but you are still not want to see them die. There's a thing called too much character development also and this movie didn't make that mistake.

bman2095 says:

Alien had a bad ending? I loved it!
And if you want people to feel sorry for your characters, to root for them to survive, they have to have details. No one cares about a bunch of blank faces. The characters in Alien had depth, the characters in The Thing had depth, the characters in 2001 Space Odyssey had depth. If you want to have no character development that's fine, but have a cool idea and have the movie have it's own unique style (Moon for example.)

z ahio says:

That's why i liked this movie so much. It didn't build characters too much and didn't make unnecessary drama and there was no lesson learnt in this movie. It was just things that happened and that's why it was realistic in my opinion.

Ending wasn't the best there could have been, but it was far from terrible. Almost every movie has worse ending than this one. One worth mentioning is alien, which is maybe the best sci-fi movie ever made.

z ahio says:

SPOILERS!!

The movie was awesome, but why did they show that much at the end? Moving lights were great and tentacles were decent, but why did they show that octopus?! Something BIG coming from the depth would have been awesome! Not so close look that doesn't leave anything for your imagination.

Rads Per Second says:

the ending was kinda stupid

cauwel3 says:

Visually it looked great.

Ruud Peeters says:

Just saw the movie, thought it was pretty good! Had a lot of tense and visual effects (even though the budget was small)!

cauwel3 says:

I have never seen that film. The remake was meh.

AlabasterSmudge says:

The original Solaris.

bman2095 says:

Oh yeah, it was when I realized that this movie wasn't going to be what I expected. They also told you immediately that someone died, and then you never saw him when they were actually on the planet. That's another problem I had with the movie, it jumped around too much. Once it finally got going, all we had were these dull boring characters. As a result, it wasn't thrilling and I didn't have anybody to root for.

cauwel3 says:

What they did with Copley's character was sort of a mess.
