Early Shape of Water & Downsizing Reviews Praise Potential Oscar Contenders

The reviews are in for Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water and Alexander Payne’s Downsizing from the 2017 Venice Film Festival. Del Toro’s The Shape of Water, starring Sally Hawkins and Michael Shannon, is being universally lauded by the critics in Venice. There is even some Oscar buzz starting to happen for this fantasy/sci-fi/romance film. Payne’s Microsizing, which was shown on opening night at the festival, showcases Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig as a couple who participates in a project that miniaturizes humans in order to save the planet. It’s receiving some strong praise from critics as well with others claiming that it doesn’t match his previous efforts in Nebraska and Sideways. Watch Perri Nemiroff and John Rocha break down what these reviews might mean for the success of these films both in the box office and on the road to the Oscars on This Just In.
